Making Sushi & Using Chopsticks

Overview

Japanese are as adept at using chopsticks as we are with forks. This activity will allow the students to have fun with chopsticks while developing more fine motor control in their hands.

Goal/Objectives:

  • Develop an appreciation for Japanese culture especially Japanese food
  • To introduce the main foods Japan
  • Learn how to make sushi
  • Learn and practice using chopsticks
  • Learn and practice Japanese table manners

 

To do ahead: Have a tray of different kinds of sushi and other foods.

Procedures:

  • Show the tray and ask the student to guess what each item is made from.
  • Show some pictures of Japanese meals.
  • Discuss different kinds of Japanese foods and sushi origin
  • Examine the tray and learn the names of the food and ingredients.
  • Demonstrate how to make sushi.
  • After making the sushi demonstrate how to use Chopsticks.
  • Show some pictures of various meals from Japan
  • Discuss the table sitting and table manners in Japan and what they say before they eat
  • Have students look at the table setting and utensils at the display and then practice and use chopsticks to eat the sushi..

  • Rice vinegar
  • Nori
  • Pickle dikon
  • cucumber
  • egg sheet
  • carrots
  • Bamboo mat to wrap sushi with
