Some people have attached trailers or campers to the plumbing in their house. In this way they are able to stay on their property and rebuild their home.
There is much optimism and desire for New Orleans residents to rebuild as this sign can testify.
This lot was once someone's home. Many abandon homes had to be demolished like this one. Just four weeks ago the City of New Orleans started demolishing abandoned homes.
The houses have to be completely gutted and rebuilt. The water created mold and mildew problems making houses unlivable.
All of the contents of homes had to be thrown away. You can look inside this house and see that it has been gutted. Nothing remains in this house. The mold and mildew smell was so strong I could smell it while driving in my car.

More signs of optimism. Some families have not been able to work on their homes yet because they either live far away or they don't have the money.
This school I believe is in Bernard Parrish and is completely destroyed. Even though the structure of the school is standing the mold and mildew make the building unusable.
Those who have remained to rebuild their homes have helped out others and in return have been helped themselves.
This roofing project was a huge community event with many people helping.
